London Area Wheelchair Curlers Excel in Toronto

January 27, 2012

Two teams of curlers from the Ilderton Curling Club played in a one day bonspiel in Toronto at the Pat O'Reid Bonspiel on January 8, 2012. The Team skipped by Mark Ideson did exceptionally well and ended up in second place overall.

Playing in the Competitive Division, Ilderton soundly defeated team Bradford by a score of 13 to 1 in only 6 ends. Ilderton was in total control scoring in 5 of the 6 ends. Of special note is that Ilderton scored a single point in the second end when Mark Ideson threw his last rock facing seven rocks counting for Bradford! Ideson knocked a Bradford rock out and rolled JUST enough into the button area to out count all of the Bradford rocks.

In their second game, Team Ideson Ilderton played another rival from the Ottawa RA Curling Club. In a very close game, Ilderton came from behind one point to steal two points in the 8th end to win the game 6 to 5. Both Teams won 4 ends each in this match.
A second team from Ilderton also played and had an excellent experience for all. Backing skip Lance Claus were players Jacqui Kinahan and Dal Wrigley. All did well overall. Great preparation by players on both teams for the upcoming Provincials.
Both Team came home with a variety of nice prizes from a great event that honours a dedicated woman who so strongly supported curling in Ontario who passed away several years ago. She was instrumental in getting wheelchair curling started in Ontario.
The stage is now set for the Provincial Playoffs when both teams from Ilderton will be sending two teams to Kempville Ontario from Jan. 31 to Feb. 4th. The two teams will play a round robin and playoff schedule against teams from Bradford, Ottawa (2) and Toronto The overall champion will represent Ontario at the Canadian Championships in Thunder Bay Ontario from Mar. 16 to 25th. We wish them both good curling!
